New partnership charts a path for systemic change in the EU

The Systems Transformation Hub, a pioneering venture designed to drive systemic solutions for Europe, was launched on 24 January 2024 at the European Parliament by a coalition of five thought-leading organisations. This comes at a pivotal time of complex and interconnected crises in the lead-up to key elections in the European Union.

The world faces an unprecedented convergence of crises: conflict, climate change, biodiversity loss, public health emergencies, social unrest around migration and deepening inequality. These challenges are inextricably linked, demanding a holistic, systemic approach to policymaking. As the European Union gears up for forthcoming elections and a new five-year European Commission mandate, the urgency of creating a vision for an EU that prioritises environmental sustainability and social cohesion has never been clearer.

“While the European Green Deal has set the stage for a profound economic transformation, its implementation faces obstacles. Short-term crisis management, coupled with rising social, financial, and political tensions, have all underscored the need for a systemic approach to achieving Europe’s green and socio-economic goals”, say the Hub’s leaders in a common statement.

The Systems Transformation Hub aims to provide strategic and systematic guidance, supporting the European institutions and Member States in policy analysis, development, policy learning, and agile decision support. The Hub will focus on European policy, yet also on Europe’s relationship with the rest of the world. This Hub emerges from the collaboration of five organisations working on systems change: MetabolicEIT Climate-KICSystemiqThe Club of Rome, and the World Resources Institute, with an open invitation for others to join.

The Systems Transformation Hub will develop a roadmap with policy orientations, to inspire the upcoming European Commission in its early months of operation. The approach includes:

  • Modelling and research: Mapping the EU status with regards to the Sustainable Development Goals and European Green Deal and conducting a gap and incoherence analysis.
  • Crafting a new progressive narrative: Developing a narrative for policymakers rooted in systemic levers, robust scientific knowledge, and data analysis to support the European Green Deal in the changing political economical context.
  • Stakeholder consultation and communication: Stress-testing and disseminating results with relevant policymakers and world-leading experts in their respective fields.

The Hub will provide strategic capability for the EU, remaining independent, transparent, science-based and non-political.

The partners

The Systems Transformation Hub aims to drive systemic solutions for Europe through a collaboration of five thought-leading organisations: Metabolic, EIT Climate-KIC, Systemiq, the Club of Rome, and the World Resources Institute.

Club of Rome

The Club of Rome is a platform of diverse thought leaders who identify systems solutions to complex global issues and promote policy initiatives and action to enable humanity to emerge from multiple planetary emergencies. Drawing on the unique, collective know-how of over 100 members – notable scientists, economists, business leaders and former politicians – The Club of Rome is committed to facilitating the difficult conversations and to advocate for paradigm and systems shifts which will enable society to emerge from our current crises. The Club of Rome makes holistic proposals through research, concrete policy positions and the convening of high-level meetings, debates, conferences, lectures and other events. It also publishes a limited number of peer-reviewed “Reports to the Club of Rome”. The Club prioritises five key areas of impact: Planetary Emergency, Reclaiming Economics; Rethinking Finance; Emerging New Civilization(s); Youth Leadership.

EIT Climate-KIC

EIT Climate-KIC is Europe’s leading climate innovation agency and community, using a systems approach to shape innovation to support cities, regions, countries and industries meet their climate ambitions.

Together with partners across the globe, EIT Climate-KIC acts to bridge the gap between climate commitments and current reality by enabling decision- makers and investors to act. They find and implement solutions in integrated ways and mobilise finance. They build skills to accelerate learning and explore innovation, opening pathways to shift mindsets and behaviours. Through radical collaboration, EIT Climate-KIC orchestrates large-scale demonstrations that show what is possible when cycles of innovation and learning are deliberately designed to trigger exponential decarbonisation and build resilient communities.

InnoBlog: Exam Seasons – Course Structure and Exam Formats

At the heart of every academic institution, the exam period signifies the culmination of courses. However, the types of exams taken can vary significantly across different schools within the EIT InnoEnergy programme. Drawing from my 17-month experience as a student enrolled at both KTH Royal Institute of Technology and UPC, Barcelona, I’ll shed light on the distinctive structure of exams within the Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) Programme.

SELECT Programme: A Dual University Experience

As a postgraduate student immersed in the Sustainable Energy Systems programme, the unique nature of our curriculum unfolds through an engaging duality between KTH Royal Institute of Technology and UPC, Barcelona. In our first year, we are required to participate in courses offered by both universities. The location determines the mode of participation – courses assigned to KTH are attended in person, while those designated to UPC are taken virtually.

However, this structure does not mean that virtual courses result in virtual exams. Instead, it reflects the adaptable and hands-on approach adopted in crafting the system. Throughout each semester, we are tasked with accumulating 30 credits, resulting in a total of ten distinct courses by year-end, equating to an overall provision of 60 credits.

Flexibility in Exam Arrangements

The examination format, like the course delivery, varies between the two universities, and the exam model depends on the professor in charge of the course. At KTH, the examination format is notably contingent upon the professor directing the course and is bound to be held at the midpoint of every semester, which is called an ‘end of a period’ in Sweden. It entails different formats such as written exams, take-home exams, and group projects. While the UPC exam model demands mostly group projects and written exams.

Written Exams: Testing Knowledge and Application

Written exams constitute a significant portion of assessments and typically manifest in two primary formats – open book or closed book examinations. The physical examination room becomes the setting for these assessments, with examiners posing questions designed to assess the depth of one’s understanding and problem-solving skills. Regardless of being open or closed book, these exams challenge students to apply their knowledge in tackling tasks.

Take-home Exams: Project-Based Assessments

Take-home exams, a distinctive assessment model, transcend the confines of traditional examinations. They often manifest in the form of written project work that necessitates comprehensive feasibility studies and, at times, programming tasks. In this model, students work outside the conventional examination setting, delving deep into research and analysis. The submission deadline, determined by the respective professor, would require a presentation of findings and methodologies employed in arriving at solutions

Group Projects: Fostering Collaborative Skills

Another dynamic aspect of assessment lies in the realm of group projects. These projects underscore the significance of teamwork and diverse perspectives in tackling a specific topic or problem statement. Collaborating with individuals possessing varied skill sets fosters a learning environment that accentuates team-working skills and the ability to thrive in diverse working dynamics.

EIT Health Flagships Call 2024 open for applications

The call for activities will enable EIT Health Partners, and our wider network of actors across Europe’s ecosystem, to focus on delivering solutions to our biggest healthcare challenges.

With a total budget available of 11 million euros, EIT Health will fund up to 22 projects and programmes to develop their innovation ideas targeted at providing products, services and courses that will address current unmet needs.

EIT Health’s unique position as a neutral platform that can act as both a strategic and an implementation instrument enables us to open this Call to everyone. Organisations, both small and large including existing Partners, start-ups, healthcare providers, research bodies, payors, policy bodies, institutions and municipalities are all invited to actively participate.

All activities will need to relate to one of EIT Health’s two priority areas, otherwise known as Flagships. The topics have been chosen to match with Europe’s top health priorities:

  • “New models to deliver healthcare” looks at how we can redefine health models to establish a foundation for value-based healthcare.
  • “Digital transformation of healthcare” aims to support digital health transformation in Europe through digital health medical devices and repurposing and sharing data.

The call will invite interested innovators to apply across a one-year time span with two application deadlines 28 February 2024 and 18 September 2024.

Applications now open for EIT Digital Master School, a leader in innovation and entrepreneurship

Applications to the EIT Digital Master School, hosting 8 exceptional European master’s programmes combining top digital education with entrepreneurship training, are now open. Graduates receive two master’s degrees, from two top European technical universities, plus a certificate from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The deadline to apply is 8 February 2024.

EIT Digital students plug into a leading network of digital innovators. You will join a unique, Europe-wide ecosystem of entrepreneurs, companies, researchers, and alumni. During the two-year course of study, you will study at two different universities in two countries, complete a work placement and participate in a two-week summer school programme.

The EIT Digital Master School programme involves a network of 15 different universities in 9 countries, allowing you to live in various parts of Europe.

Because it is an EIT Digital programme, innovation and entrepreneurship are incorporated into education.

“Doing your MSc via EIT Digital not only gives you a master’s degree at the end of your course, it also teaches you independence,” said FinTech graduate Sanya Shoaib. “I got to learn about FinTech, which is my major, and also got the chance to do a minor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.”

Graduates not only gain the knowledge and skills to launch their startups, but the concrete work they undertake with potential employers as part of the curricula, also makes them very attractive for recruiters.

“We had this matchmaking event organised by EIT Digital where I made the contact for the company that I was hired by,” says graduate Michele Marabelli. “There were companies there pitching themselves and the positions they had.”

Eight programmes

There are eight different programmes, focused on providing cutting edge, hands-on learning in the most important digital fields today.

Two of the programmes, in cyber security and robotics, are provided as a part of SPECTRO (SPecialised Education programmes in CybersecuriTy and Robotics), an EU collaboration. EIT Digital brings its expertise in developing masters’ programmes to the consortium, which includes 12 higher education institutions from seven countries, two innovative SMEs and a leading research centre.


SPECTRO’s goal is to help ensure a sufficient supply of digital talent in Europe while offering educational accessibility and diversity for students of every gender, age and background. You will obtain cutting-edge skills and be positioned as a future leader in the booming fields of cybersecurity and robotics.

Another new programme offered this year is FinTech for Business, which gives you the skills and technical knowledge needed to succeed in the rapidly changing world of finance – where machine learning, data analytics, and blockchain technology are rewriting what is possible.

EIT Food opens Entrepreneurship applications for 2024

EIT Food – the world’s largest food innovation community – has announced the launch of its 2024 entrepreneurship programmes, with applications open from 18 December 2023 until 19 February 2024. EIT Food is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.

The EIT Food entrepreneurship programmes are designed to launch, accelerate and scale impactful agrifood tech startups to solve global food system challenges and deliver new food innovations and businesses. From personalised nutrition solutions to alternative proteins and innovations tackling food waste, the three programmes support the development of healthier, more sustainable and resilient European food systems.

Programme applications are now open to new entries from the European Union and its associated countries.

Startups benefit from high-quality training, personalised mentoring and high-impact pilot projects. They also enjoy access to the world’s largest food innovation community, as well as the exposure, resources and tools needed to grow and succeed. Startups that are successful in their application will have the opportunity to apply for EIT Food’s Impact Fund and receive investments of up to €500K.

Bosque Foods is a pioneering biomass fermentation company boasting a versatile mycelium-platform from which they create next-generation whole-muscle meat and fish alternatives.

Breakthrough Technologies in Batteries, Health Care, and Machine Learning: Announcing The 2024 EIT Awards Nominees

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2024 EIT Awards. In the competition’s tenth year, the EIT Community is celebrating  20 outstanding innovators from 15 countries for their innovative products in areas such as healthcare, machine learning, regenerative farming, and batteries, among others. 

The EIT Awards recognise the most promising entrepreneurs and innovators emerging from the EIT’s ecosystem across Europe: from student to entrepreneur, from lab to market, and from idea to solutions. This dynamic innovation approach creates a unique environment where nominees develop and scale innovative solutions to tackle pressing global challenges in the fields of climate, energy, digitalisation, food, health, manufacturing, mobility and raw materials.

The 2024 EIT Award nominees feature many deep tech applications and demonstrate the diversity of EIT’s pan-European innovation ecosystem with the following countries being represented: Bulgaria, Czechia, Finland, France, Germany,  Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK . The full list of nominees and their innovations can be found here.

The 2024 EIT Awards Ceremony will be held during the EIT Summit on 20 February 2024 in Brussels, Belgium as part of the EIT’s flagship event bringing together top industry players, EIT- supported entrepreneurs and innovators, policy-makers, students and more. The 27 nominees will compete beforehand in an online semi-final on 14 February 2024 with 9 finalists advancing to the public awards ceremony. 

The nominees will compete in the following four new categories that represent the driving dynamics of entrepreneurship in Europe:

  • The Innovation Team Award, recognising the innovation team – made up of researchers, academics, and entrepreneurs – that developed a breakthrough product or service

  • The Changemaker Award, highlighting a leader within the EIT Community and beyond,  whose activities and achievements have the potential to generate a significant social impact

  • The Venture Award, recognises the start-up with the greatest potential to generate impact on citizens,  and the economy overall, addressing major societal challenges.

Each award comes with a monetary prize of EUR 50 000 (first place), EUR 20 000 (second place), and EUR 10 000 (third place). South East participates in Human-Robot Collaboration panel at COP28

COP, or the “Conference of Parties”, is an annual United Nations summit about the climate crisis. This year, COP28 takes place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November until 12 December 2023. Although COP is first and foremost about the negotiations, the EU will also host 90+ side events on the most pressing climate-related issues. One of these online panels was held on the 5th of December 2023 called “Empowering a Human-Centric Industry for the Twin Transitions“. The discussion focused on the importance of skills in tackling contemporary challenges in the new era of manufacturing. 

Dr. Niki Kousi, Managing Director of EIT Manufacturing South East, participated in this panel along with other important speakers regarding the role of innovation in driving the green and digital transition at a COP28 EU side event organized by HADEA. Dr. Kousi emphasized the significance of human centricity in manufacturing and the need for businesses to prepare for this technological revolution. She was invited to give some insights regarding the ways human-robot collaboration supports human centricity considering her previous experience as a project manager and coordinator of “THOMAS” project.  

She also highlighted the role of EIT Manufacturing, a European innovation community dedicated to fostering innovation and bridging the skills gap for the manufacturing industry. She presented how EIT Manufacturing plays an important role in the exploitation and industry adoption of such technologies that generate from projects like “THOMAS” and “SHERLOCK”. 


The panel was moderated by Marina Zanchi, Director of the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Present to the panel were also Liviu Stirbăț, Member of the Cabinet of Vice-President Jourova, European Commission, Chris Ivory, Professor of Innovation Management at Mälardalens University, Sweden, Gaetano Patrimia, Innovation & IP Manager at Prima Additive S.r.l., and Steven Dhondt, Senior Research Scientist, Professor at TNO – Dutch Organisation for Applied Scientific Research.  

The panel also discussed the EU’s commitment to research and innovation in driving the green and digital transition. Marina Zanchi, Director of the European Health and Digital Executive Agency pointed out that the EU has funded numerous projects aimed at achieving these goals and stated that the EU is committed to supporting innovative solutions that address the challenges of the 21st century. The importance of Human-centric manufacturing in aiming at a more sustainable industrial sector and the differences in the workforce on how upskilling is important for the future, were some hot topics discussed also in the panel. 

The COP28 EU side event provided an opportunity to discuss the critical role of innovation in driving the green and digital transition. Attention Europe’s top Scale-ups: Apply to the EIT Digital Champions for Your Chance to Win Fundraising Support

EIT Digital is going to supercharge European scale-ups with the EIT Digital Champions, a competition that rewards innovative companies with the vital support they need to obtain Series A and B funding.

European deep tech companies looking for investment funds to help them scale up and grow are invited to apply by 30 January 2024. Selected finalists will pitch their ideas before a jury of international investors. The winners, the Champions, will receive free access to 12 months of EIT Digital Growth Services support, a programme that will PREPARE you to pitch your company, CONNECT you with international investors, and help you RAISE your next round. The EIT Digital Growth Services team is highly accomplished in guiding the growth of scale-ups and is well known in the industry. They not only have a vast network of investor connections – more than 1000 all over Europe – but they also know what each investor is looking for and what they want and like to hear!

Who should apply?

We’re looking for fast-growing European deep tech start-ups with a unique and differentiated product offering that leverages  highly innovative digital technologies. These companies should have strong commercial traction and be in need for additional capital to expand into new markets.

Moreover, EIT Digital is strongly dedicated to endorsing scale-ups with women founders and women in C-level roles, and encourages applications from such ventures. Similarly, EIT Digital extends its support across all of Europe and eagerly anticipates applications from scale-ups in EIT RIS countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.

The Journey of a Champion

EIT Digital Champions builds on a legacy of success. For instance, in October of 2022, WSense competed in the EIT Digital Champions, pitching their amazing company and their Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) technology. After impressing the jury, they were declared one of the Champions. Over the next twelve months, WSense worked with EIT Digital’s Growth Services team to PrepareConnect& Raise. Together they prepared a compelling message, connected with key international investors and arranged numerous investor calls. In October of 2023, just one year later, WSense raised EUR 9M from investors in three different EU countries!

EIT Digital launches The EIT Digital (d)Academy to upskill talent for the digital age using the power of AI

EIT Digital is delighted to present the (d)Academy, a global initiative to provide talent with the cutting-edge digital skills needed to thrive in today’s economy.

More than three-quarters of companies in the EU report difficulties finding workers with the right skill set, and one-quarter of SMEs consider the availability of skilled staff and experienced managers the most important problem.

As new technologies transform how we work and live, there is an urgent need to reskill and upskill workers to avoid displacement and ensure a fair digital transition, but data from the 2023 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) shows only 54% of European citizens have at least basic digital skills.

The (d)Academy will bring together experts from industry, education, and research to develop modular learning programs on topics from cybersecurity to data analytics to machine learning. Programs range from online courses to blended learning and hands-on training.
