BAU presents EIT opportunities aligned with Smart Specialization Strategy

Last week, our CEO & EIT Community RIS Hub National Secretary in N. Macedonia, MSc. Aleksandar Stamboliev was part of the final Smart Specialization Strategy workshop.

Stamboliev presented the EIT opportunities for cooperation which are aligned with Smart Specialization Strategy and BAU Accelerator was an integral part of the Smart Specialization Strategy process since the start of the project.

North Macedonia has set its sights on fostering green and sustainable growth by embedding knowledge, innovation, and technology in the creation of high-value added products and services that can compete both domestically and on the international stage. Through its Smart Specialization Strategy (S3), the country aims to harness the power of various sectors to drive economic development and ensure a sustainable future.

The S3 vision for North Macedonia encompasses several key areas, including Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Industry 4.0, Smart Agriculture and Food, Sustainable Materials and Smart Buildings, Energy Efficiency, and Tourism. These domains have been identified as crucial for achieving sustainable growth and staying competitive in the global market.

In the ICT sector, North Macedonia is transitioning from outsourcing to the export of innovative products and services, making it a driving force in the digitalization of society. By embracing Industry 4.0 principles, the country aims to develop a smart and sustainable industry that is integrated into global value chains. This integration will not only enhance competitiveness but also contribute to the growth of green technologies and practices.

Smart agriculture and Food are seen as key areas for North Macedonia to unlock higher value-added opportunities. The strategy focuses on promoting collaboration and partnerships across the entire agricultural value chain, including businesses, research institutions, and policymakers. The aim is to develop diverse, high-quality, and innovative food products tailored to both domestic and export markets. This involves investing in research, education, and training to foster a knowledge-based agri-food sector and ensure the sustainable use of resources through innovative solutions.

Another critical domain is Sustainable materials and Smart buildings, which aims to foster green growth through knowledge transfer, circular economy practices, innovative materials, and smart building technologies. The strategy emphasizes the importance of building strong partnerships, modernizing the education system to support innovation and entrepreneurship, and strengthening scientific excellence. Furthermore, companies are encouraged to adopt environmentally sustainable business models, while the use of recycling, energy efficiency, and renewable energy sources is actively promoted in the business environment.

To achieve these objectives, North Macedonia recognizes the need to develop human capital and skills for innovation, as well as for green and digital transformation within the S3 domains. The strategy also emphasizes the importance of the green and digital transformation of both society and businesses, ensuring continuous dialogue and collaboration to drive progress.

By aligning its efforts with the Smart Specialization Strategy, North Macedonia aims to position itself as a hub for innovation and sustainable development. The country recognizes the potential of these sectors to drive economic growth, create job opportunities, and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. With a focus on collaboration, knowledge transfer, and embracing new technologies, North Macedonia is poised to pave the way for a greener and more prosperous future.
